How to open .egg and .alz files on a Mac

Got an .egg or .alz file on your Mac and macOS says it can’t open it? The archive tool built into macOS doesn’t know these two formats. egg and alz come from Korean archivers, so you need an archive app that can read them.

How to open an egg file on a Mac — three steps

  1. Install HanFlow Zip for Mac (macOS 13 or later on an Apple silicon Mac — every feature is yours to try for 30 days).
  2. In Finder, right-click (Control-click) the .egg file → Open With → HanFlow Zip. Dropping the file on the app icon works too.
  3. When the archive’s contents appear, click Extract at the top and pick where to put the files. Tick Extract to folder named after the archive to get a new folder with the archive’s name.

Faster — extract straight from Finder

If you don’t need the window at all, right-click the file in Finder and choose Services → HanFlow Zip: Extract Here. The files are extracted into a new folder named after the archive, right next to it. You can also pick just the files you need in the list and drag them into Finder.

When it won’t work

  • Password-protected egg or alz — these can’t be extracted yet. Asking the sender for a zip is the quickest fix.
  • egg and alz are extract-only. You can’t create them or add files to them.
  • The Mac version is for Apple silicon Macs running macOS 13 or later.

Frequently asked questions

Can’t the Mac’s built-in Archive Utility open egg files?

No. The built-in tool handles common formats such as zip. You need an archive app that reads egg and alz.

Can I still extract egg files after the 30 days?

Yes. When the trial ends, extracting and viewing archives keep working; only creating archives and adding files need a license.

Does the same work on Windows?

Yes. On Windows it is one right-click → «Extract here» in File Explorer. See How to open .egg and .alz files on Windows.
