How to convert HEIC to JPG on Windows — iPhone photos in HanFlow Image

Your iPhone saves every photo as a .heic file. That's fine on the phone — until you need to upload the image to a form that only takes JPG, or share it with someone on a machine that can't open HEIC. HanFlow Image converts HEIC to JPG in one window, once Windows knows how to read the format.

First: let Windows open HEIC

HEIC relies on the HEVC codec, which is covered by patents. Because of that, HanFlow Image does not ship its own HEIC decoder. Instead it uses the codec Windows already provides — as long as two extensions are installed:

  • HEIF Image Extensions
  • HEVC Video Extensions — many PCs already have a manufacturer edition installed. On some PCs, HEVC may be a paid download.

If the extensions are missing when you try to open an HEIC file, HanFlow Image will let you know and offer to open the place where you can get them. Once they're in place, HEIC files open like any other image.

Convert HEIC to JPG — five steps

  1. Install and open HanFlow Image (every feature is yours to try for 30 days). Open the HEIC file you want to convert. You can also browse a folder in thumbnail view, right-click an HEIC file, and choose Convert….
  2. Open the Convert window: press Ctrl+E, click the Convert button on the toolbar, or choose Edit ▸ Convert… in the File menu.
  3. In the Convert image format window, pick JPG under Target file format. Set Quality (%) — it defaults to 90.
  4. Under Save path, the original folder is already filled in. Click Browse… to pick a different folder. Under Save options, choose whether to append text to the file name, how to handle duplicates, and whether to delete the original after conversion. The list shows the Original file name next to the Output file name, so you can check before you start.
  5. Click OK. The file is converted and saved.

Good to know

  • Camera data (EXIF), GPS and color profiles are carried over only when a JPEG original is saved as JPEG. Converting from HEIC means they won't transfer to the new JPG.
  • Need a smaller file? Use Resize… (Ctrl+R) and its Resize by file size (JPG) option to aim for a target size.
  • Going the other direction? You can convert JPG to other formats — open the JPG, press Ctrl+E, and pick from the format list (PNG, WebP, TIFF, AVIF, and more).

Frequently asked questions

Why doesn't HanFlow Image include HEIC support by itself?

HEIC uses the HEVC codec, which is protected by patents. Rather than bundling a licensed decoder, HanFlow Image relies on the Windows photo extensions you already have — or can install.

Is the camera info kept after conversion?

HanFlow Image reads and displays shooting data (EXIF) from HEIC files. However, camera data, GPS and color profiles are preserved during save only when the source is a JPEG. Converting from HEIC to JPG means that information is not carried over.

Can I convert several photos at once?

The Convert window converts the photo you are currently viewing — one image at a time. Open the next file and run the conversion again for each photo you need.
