ScreenToGif is an open-source tool that records your screen and lets you edit the animation before saving it as a GIF. If that is exactly what you need, it does the job well. But if you also want screenshots with scrolling capture, markup and pin-to-screen, plus screen recording with system sound and microphone, you may want a single tool that covers both. HanFlow Cap is one option. Below is what each tool offers, based on their own pages, so you can decide which fits your workflow.

What ScreenToGif does
ScreenToGif lets you "record a selected area of your screen, live feed from your webcam or live drawings from a sketchboard" and then "edit and save the animation as a gif, apng, video, psd or png image" (ScreenToGif README on GitHub). That built-in editor is the heart of ScreenToGif: the recording becomes an animation you can work on before you save it as a GIF, an animated PNG, a video, a PSD or a PNG image. It requires .NET 9 Desktop Runtime and is available through GitHub releases, the Microsoft Store and Chocolatey.
Its README does not mention recording system sound or microphone audio.
What HanFlow Cap does
HanFlow Cap combines screenshots and screen recording in one tool. Here is what it covers:
- Capture with one key: region, window, monitor and full screen (Ctrl+Shift+A, W, M, F), fixed-size capture and a delayed capture of 3, 5 or 10 seconds.
- Scrolling capture: save a long web page or document as one image.
- Pin to screen: keep a capture floating on top while you work.
- Edit right away: pen, rectangle, arrow, text, mosaic and crop, 8 shapes and undo.
- Watermark and print for captures, and a watermark for recordings.
- Save as PNG or JPG; record to MP4, GIF or M4A.
- No ads, no sign-in, 26 interface languages.

GIF, MP4 or sound only
HanFlow Cap records the screen with system sound and microphone to MP4, and can also record a GIF or capture audio only as M4A. You can show or hide the cursor, pause mid-recording, take a screenshot while recording, overlay your webcam, or schedule a recording to start at a set time and length.
One thing to be clear about: HanFlow Cap does not edit recordings frame by frame. It records and saves. If you need to trim or cut a recording afterward, HanFlow Cut, the video editor from the same family, handles that for MP4 and M4A files. GIF frame-by-frame editing is not part of either tool, and that is where ScreenToGif has a genuine advantage.

Which one to choose
- Choose ScreenToGif if you want to edit the animation in a built-in editor before saving, record a webcam feed or sketchboard drawings as an animation, or save as APNG or PSD.
- Choose HanFlow Cap if you want one tool for screenshots — scrolling capture, pin to screen, markup — and screen recording with system sound and microphone to MP4, GIF or M4A, with a webcam overlay or a scheduled start.
- If you also work on a Mac, HanFlow Cap has a Mac version for macOS 14 or later on Apple silicon.
